Study Abroad Student Hopes to Fulfill His Dreams

Many students are in search for study abroad opportunities. Some might find it frustrating. But with all the hard work and dedication, one will feel a sense of accomplishment.

This is the road for one UC student. Mr. Thouk Chanrotana just recently graduated in June of 2009 with a B.A. in English Literature. He knows what his goal is in life, to help the less fortunate people in our country. Every time there is a chance for him to pursue his dreams he grabs onto it.

He thanks The University of Cambodia (UC) for pushing him to try his hardest in everything he does. He focused all of his studies here at UC, which helped him advance his English skills.

He received good news from his brother, who is currently studying at Peking University in China, about a scholarship from his sought out school, China Agricultural University (CAU). Mr. Chanrotana began preparing all the relevant materials he needed.

Not getting help from anyone, besides the assistance from CAU, Mr. Chanrotana proved to himself that he can get the scholarship on his own.

And by the end of June 2009, he did. He received a fultime scholarship to attend CAU for two years.

There was no TOEFL test he had to take. Instead, there was a study plan that he had to submit along with the application.

In the study plan, Mr. Chanrotana first had to express a thank you letter to the Chinese Government, the Republic People of China, and the China Council. Then he had to give information regarding any experience he had gained throughout his studies. His experience included working as a personal Assistance for Dr. Diep Sophal, a professor of Cambodian Studies and Cambodian History here at UC.  In addition, Mr. Chanrotana was also a Khmer-English translator.

The final point he had to make was in regards to his goal plan.  “When I come back to Cambodia I want to help the poor people in the countryside,” stated Mr. Chanrotana.

Mr. Chanrotana will be pursuing a Master’s Degree in Rural Development. He plans on leaving to China on August 25, 2009 to get a head start in preparing for his study. He will be back in July of 2011.

According to Mr. Chanrotana, “CAU is the top-notch school for agriculture. I choose this school because it is my dream to work in rural development. I want to study in Humanities and Development.”

Mr. Chanrotana knows there are many problems in the countryside. As a result he has big plans for the future.

“My dream is to create my own organization. The purpose of my organization is to help the poor people develop a plan as well.”

Someday, Mr. Chanrotana wants to build schools like The University of Cambodia.

“I am very exited to attend CAU because it has my major. I hope I can someday fulfill my dreams when I go back to my country.”
